In summary, opportunistic salpingectomy is a safe intervention in the
short term, when done concurrently with hysterectomy or instead of tubal
ligation. It has the potential to reduce the incidence and mortality
from ovarian cancer, and it may have an important role as a temporizing
measure in high-risk women with BRCA mutations who are unwilling to
undergo standard risk reducing surgery (bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy)
at an early age. It will still be essential to evaluate long-term
safety and efficacy outcomes to support the ongoing use of this
intervention in the general population as well as the high-risk setting.
