Cancer Survivorship in the USA
Executive Summary
This Series of five papers in The Lancet Oncology explores cancer survivorship programmes in US healthcare systems.
In the first paper, Deborah Mayer and colleagues define the individuals who comprise the ever-increasing population of cancer survivors, their needs, and their perspectives of survivorship care. Linda Jacobs and Lawrence Shulman then highlight the key barriers to the implementation of survivorship programmes, and suggest how these obstacles can be overcome. In the third paper of the Series, Larissa Nekhlyudov and colleagues discuss the integration of primary care physicians into the care of cancer survivors across different settings. Similarly, Christopher Recklitis and Karen Syrjala explore the provision of psychosocial care for cancer survivors and how optimised psychosocial services can be integrated into survivorship care programmes. In the final paper of this Series, the important question of how best to measure the success of survivorship programmes is discussed by Michael Halpern and Keith Argenbright.
