ROSENTHAL, Laurie Star (Kat) Died December 23, 2009, age 56, after battling ovarian cancer since 2004. Survived by her husband and best friend Nader Ghalejeh, mother Helene, sister Michele, and brother-in-law Brian. Star spent most of her life fighting for social justice, from her wild and crazy teens as a Yippie and part of a feminist "guerrilla theatre" troupe, to when she went legit, became a lawyer and opened an immigration and criminal defence practice. She went on to work for several trade unions, most recently the Hospital Employees' Union. She was also a published researcher of women's early trade union history. She loved cats, gardening, music, dancing and murder mysteries, and was smart, passionate and funny. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. In celebration of Star's life, there will be a dance to raise funds for OvCaRe, BC's ovarian cancer research team, on Saturday, January 30, 8:00 p.m. at the Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Street, in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Star's name to OvCaRe ( ovcare.ca ) via the BC Cancer Foundation, or to ACOR, whose online ovarian cancer support group (where she was known as Kat) was her lifeline (
www.acor.org/donate/now/ - in the group option, select Ovarian).
