 Description: Rachel Gibson, PhD of University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia explores the links between chemotherapy induced toxicities that would normally be treated in isolation. With chemotherapy induced diarrhea, many patients are experiencing significant pain. Dr. Gibson mentions studies which have explored this further in the brain, in the case of chemotherapy induced neuropathy. Results from studies show that pathogenic bacteria responsible for producing LPS are also found in the spinal cord. Therefore, there is hope to show that in the spinal cord there are two linked toxicities. This would be the first time showing clear mechanistic links between toxicities and would be a huge step forward for patients in supportive care.
